I finally found the background that I have been looking for and interestingly enough it was created by our friends at CHNM for the Mary Washington site. Thank YOU!!! That was driving me crazy. My Image in the masthead needs to be smaller but I think I like the latest version of it because it looks like there is lots of snow. I might just have a hazy brain right now from being snowed in...The Type assignment is an incredible time sink-hole but I am slowly becoming more adept. Maybe...almost a novice. Back to work.
George - This looks great! The background is beautiful. Yes - the header DOES look like snow. But what doesn't these days? I agree that I would make the image in the header smaller - it is overwhelming and takes away from the amazing font you used. Plus, a little open space would make the header seem less crowded.
I like how you made the main content look like it is on parchment. Can you increase the padding around the Introduction like you did around the paragraph on TJ?

Thanks Lynn. Your feedback is very helpful. I saw yours today. I will try to look at it more closely later but I really like the overall scheme. I especially like the masthead and the way the headings throughout the main content area match the colors in the header. It might be my bleary eyes but it looks like the header image is a little blurry...but I have been looking at a computer all day. Thanks again.

Thanks! Actually, I was trying to make the header font blurry. I used several methods in PhotoShop - my goal was to make the heading font look like it "fit" with the old parchment, i.e. old, faded, blurry. Do you think that comes through? Or does it just look like someone with poor eyesight designed the header?

That make sense. I get it now. I am not the most visually aware person.
I think it is fine the way it is but it seems so subtle that it wasnt
clear to me that was the intent. I really do like the parchment and the
overall look. Thanks again for your feedback. I have to work more on
mine today...gotta get those footnotes working.
Best,
George

George, thanks for saying many of the things I've been worrying about -- I promise I hadn't read your recent posts before I wrote my post for this week! But it's a huge relief to see that others are dealing with the same challenges and frustrations that I am -- the time sink, the trial and error, etc. Looks like you're doing great, but I just wanted to make sure you weren't alone!
I think your background is good (though a little dark with the black fonts) and I *love* the wood effect -- I may have to ask you about that. In the meantime, I spent some time today trying to figure out how to put a transparent film behind text that blurs the background a bit and lets the text pop a little more -- feel free to ask *me* abou that if you're interested or think it would help. (Then we can add "reliance on the ideas and suggestions and practical solutions provided by classmates" to the things we have in common about our approaches. I know I wouldn't be surviving if people weren't generously helping out.) In the meantime, I think you're off to a great start -- keep doing what you're doing, balancing ambition with practicality, but don't forget to take time away from the computer now and then! =)

Hi George - I like your updated page! The wood effect is amazing. Lynn

Hi Tracy. Thanks. I would love to learn your trick. We should probably
create a wiki and archive a shared experiences place. The wood trick
was easy. Hardest part was just finding the right texture/color. The
next time I go to an Early Republic tourist location I am going to take
some pictures of the older wallpaper in order to try to get the
textured feel. Yeah...I step away from the computer a lot...I am doing
a major field readings with Prof. P also. Keeping me busy in the
digital and analog worlds. Hopefully we will be back in class Tuesday.

Thanks Lynn. It was easy to do. I am not sure that I like it. Maybe if it was a little more subtle. I am also starting to hate my background. I think I would be better off going with a white background like yours with variant shades of grey. I will probably be blowing it up again soon. ARGHHH!!!
